Vintage Catalin Bakelite Poker Chip Set in Herringbone Tweed covered Wooden Case
POSSIBLY made by Abercrombie & Fitch
(That is the only other case I have seen similar to this one with the marking intact.)
You are bidding on a beautiful vintage Catalin Bakelite set. There are no markings to indicate the maker of this set. However, in my research it does resemble other sets made by Ambercrombie & Fitch in the 1930's. It does have significant wear to the Herringbone Tweed material covering the wooden box especially at the corners. This is a quality set with beautiful dovetailing on the case and on the inner trays holding the chips. The inner trays do need a little wood glue on a couple of the trays and appear to be made of walnut. The latches are intact though each side has one of the brad nails missing. The tortoise shell Bakelite handle is in excellent condition. The hinges on the lid are in excellent working order and intact. The patina on the hardware is beautiful in my opinion. There is a total of 350 Catalin Bakelite chips in 3 colors, Golden Yellow, Green, & Red. They all have gorgeous marbling traits. There is 169 Golden Yellow chips, 88 Green chips, & 93 Red chips. All are in Excellent condition with no chips or breaking that I can find. Two of the knobs are missing on the wooden trays. In my opinion this would be easy and beautiful to restore but is also wonderfully appealing as is. I leave cleaning and repairs up to you dear buyer.
