    Description

For your consideration are two important and related historical items.
    (1) The first item is a 1923 Real Photo postcard photograph of a group of Sioux Indian Chiefs and participants in the historic August 5, 1873 battle of Massacre Canyon and in the 50th year commemoration of the event in Trenton Nebraska. Each participant in the great battle is identified and an (X) has been placed alongside their name. The attack and massacre of the Pawnee people by an Oglala & Brule Sioux war party of over 1,000 warriors has been described by historians as the last large-scale battle between Native American tribes in that region of the country. It resulted in 71 Pawnee warriors and 102 women and children killed. Also present in the photograph is Indian Agent, John Williamson, who it is reported accompanied the attacking Sioux. He was also a member of the delegation that traveled to the ceremonies. There are numerous articles, books and internet references about this historic event.
    (2) The second item is a July 18, 1923 contract between J.P. Allen, a representative for the Massacre Canyon Memorial Association of Trenton, Nebraska and William Penny and Frank C. Goings, representatives for the group of Native Americans in the photograph. The contract calls for payment of 0.00 to the attending individuals to participate in the commemoration ceremonies from August 3 to 5th.
NOTE: A generous Historian/Collector wrote to provide me with the following additional information and historical context. "Flying Hawk is misplaced. He is actually third from left." The gentleman also added that "Frank Goings was a mixed blood at Pine Ridge who was a friend of the Nebraska rancher James Cook: they exchanged many letters which can be found in the Cook papers at Agate Fossil Beds National Park."..... Thank You TP.
The Real Photo is in excellent condition and has an AZO Stamp Box. The contract measures 8 1/2 x 13. It has a small piece missing in the upper edge and general wear. (see scan). However, it does not detract from the text. Both are GUARANTEED to be original and not reproductions or later copies. Purchase with confidence..... See my 100% Positive Feedbacks.
I do my best to describe each item that I put up for sale or auction and to give some historical context if possible. However, please feel free to ask any questions you have before purchasing or bidding. I will be happy to respond as quickly as I can..... Shipping is via USPO Priority Mail and very well protected....
I've been a collector of photographs, important documents and publications related to Native American history for over 35 years. I am not a commercial dealer. My collection mainly covers the period from early 1700's to 1930. The images (all original) are of various sizes and have been safely stored in archival museum boxes in a climate controlled setting. They are in the same condition as when I acquired them....  Please let me know if you are searching for anything in particular and I will be happy to check and place them on eBay if available.
I also have some interesting non-Native material and vernacular photographs that caught my eye over the years.... See my current listings and watch for others....
Always interested in any feedback that might shed additional light on this item.
