Description
For sale is an interesting Historical Tankard Mug with a portrait image of Josh, the Chief of the San Carlos Apaches in 1898. The image is from a photo taken by F. A. Rinehart, who was famous for his portraits of Native American leaders and delegation members at the 1898 Indian Congress in Omaha. Here's a link to the original photo in the Smithsonian: https://americanindian.si.edu/collections-search/archives/components/sova-nmai-ac-119-ref13 . The porcelain mug was made by Smith-Phillips, East Liverpool, Ohio between 1903-1929, which is when the company existed before merging into American China. The mug is 4.75" tall, 5.5" across, 4" diameter base. The mug is in good antique condition, with some flecks off of the green surface in a few places, like on the handle (see pictures). There is also crazing on the bottom. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. The picture has been enhanced with some face painting in a red color. If you look closely in person, too small to show on photograph, there is a tiny reverse image copyright of F. A. Rinehart Oct. 8th, 1898 that runs down into the medals. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
