    Description

Original Photo of Sioux Indians Arrested
Battle of Lightning Creek Massacre 1903
Rare and original 1903 photograph taken in- Douglas, Wyoming- of nine Oglala Sioux Indian Warriors, arrested for the murder of Sheriff William Miller at the Battle of Lightning Creek.  Seven people died including Sheriff Miller, Chief Black Kettle and Chief Eagle Feather.
    Many
thought that after the Battle of the Little Big Horn and the Battle of Wounded Knee- Indian battles had become a thing of the
past and civilization had taken over.
Yet, one more confrontation would occur......the Battle of Lightning Creek.  The last of the Indian battles.
This bloody massacre was over the misunderstanding between Indians and Whites concerning hunting rights.
The details of the bloody-battle at Lightning Creek are difficult to state with confidence, for the accounts of both Indian and White participants vary substantially and are colored by emotion.
Historians who have examined the incident give the impressio
n that the 1903 shoot-out was an isolated event, but in actuality the Lightning Creek affair came the end of a decade or more of hunting-rights conflicts between American Indians and the state of Wyoming.
