    Description

An original engraved 1926 photogravure engraving of Plate 634 from Volume 18 of Edward Curtis' monumental book
    The North American Indian
(1926).  The image of an Assiniboin native placating a slain eagle's spirit shows the respect & gratitude Natives had for the beautiful bird which had significance for them on several levels.  The image is a powerfully spiritual one by Curtis (1868-1952).  The photogravure process -- though involved & expensive --was the choice of many serious early-20th-C photographers as it could -- in numbered-reproduction -- match the delicate tones of their original photographs and had a soft velvety quality akin to French impressionist painting of the era. Curtis (1868-1952) chose a sepia tint for his photogravures. This photograuvre is by Beaux Arts and is in good condition w an anomaly in the paper at the bottom -- under the glass.  Frame dimensions 16.75" x 12.5" Sepia portion of engraving 14" x 10.25"
