  • Condition: This is a real deal 1965 396/425HP engine block. The casting number on the block is 3855962. The casting date is C 15 5 which decodes as March 15th, 1965. The 3855962 block only came with 4 bolt main caps and was used exclusively for high performance 396 engines in 1965-1966 model years. This is a true 1965 block with the "fangs" above the timing cover and bellhousing mounting flange which is only found on early blocks and is a dead giveaway when looking for originality. Tis block also has "PASS" cast into the passenger side bellhousing flange instead of "HI PERF" as found on later blocks. "PASS" was only cast on blocks through early April 1965. This is a very hard to find early block that could make a very rare car correct again. This block is in good condition overall. This was pulled out of a god running flatbottom boat in the 80's and has been in cool, dry storage ever since. Then it came to me it was built as an LS7 454. The bore size is 4.25 which is standard bore 427/454.......

    Description

This is a real deal 1965 396/425HP engine block.
This block also has "PASS" cast into the passenger side bellhousing flange instead of "HI PERF" as found on later blocks. "PASS" was only cast on blocks through early April 1965. There are a lot of later blocks out there that have been faked into earlier blocks. If you see a block dated before April and it has "HI PERF" cast on the real flange than you can be sure it is not the real deal.  This is a very hard to find early block that could make a very rare car correct again. I don't believe there are any other blocks here on Ebay with "PASS" cast on the rear flange and I have not seen one listed for a very long time.
This block is in good condition overall. This was pulled out of a good running flat bottom boat in the 80's and has been in cool, dry storage ever since. Then it came to me it was built as an LS7 454. The bore size is 4.25 which is standard bore 427/454. Hot rodders and boat guys liked using this casting number because these blocks are known for having extremely thick cylinder walls. I have seen them bored to 4.350 and beyond. There are no sleeves and all cylinders look very nice with no ridge at the tops. There are no stampings on the front pad of the block and the deck surfaces have had shallow o-rings added for better cylinder sealing. I will be happy to have this block magnafluxed and pressure tested before shipping it out. I have not done it yet since I know the history of this block and know it was a good running engine when it was pulled out of the boat. These real deal early L78/Z16 blocks rarely come up for sale. Don't miss this very rare original block!
I also have an original GM 396/427 steel crank and standard bore 427 Forged pistons/rods that would work great with this block. I will be happy to work a deal to include these if they will help achieve your goal.
This is simply an awesome original 1965 396/425HP 4 bolt main block.  Don't miss this awesome chance to own a real deal early 1965 L78 block!
